Brief
project description
Digital images have already become a necessary daily product of our
life. We produce large amounts of images through digital cameras,
video cameras and most of all, the most handy devices—mobile
phones. In the year 2004, mobile phone manufacturers become the biggest
camera manufacturers in the world. If digital images are some kind
of food, we may smell a lot of decaying food. In this project we are
going to show the decay of digital images submitted by the audience
through cell phone/Bluetooth enabled devices. |
|
A digital ecosystem with cellular automated ant-like micro-organisms
will be built. In this ecosystem, images submitted by the audiences
will be served as a food source. The micro-organisms will move around
and eat up specific pixels. They will then take the pixels as raw
material to build their nest, or as food source for them to live,
and reproduce. Audiences will be able to see how the different species
of micro-organism interact with the images and each others. |

| How it works ... |
|
We have two proposals for physical
setup of this project. The first one is a large scale projection.
It is a system that goes across the wall of a museum, showing the
images submitted by the audiences and a panoramic view of the digital
ecosystem. |

| Technical description |
The interaction of this project is mainly
based on the Bluetooth wireless connection (with enough support from
the mobile phone company, it can also work through MMS). Depending
on the scale, one or more networked computer will be used for rendering
the landscape.

The other proposal is to show it in separated small screen on the
wall, just like how the fish were shown in fish tanks in aquariums.
Information of specific micro-organisms will be given in little captions.
The audiences are able to see them move while they can choose to submit
their pictures to specific “tank”. |
