The line between life and not-life Martin Hanczyc of the Center for Fundamental Living Technology (FLinT) in Denmark, shows off protocells - simple chemical blobs that display life-like behavior - in his TED talk. The protocells move around, feed on energy, dance with each other, merge, split up again and very much resemble digital artificial life environments. I am looking forward to a point where wetware labs become more and more common in the art-tech scene, and coders get their hands dirty with chemicals and primordial goo.

Three characteristics we look for to recognize life out there: the system needs to be in non-equilibrium, needs to be in a liquid form, and has to be able to make and break chemical bonds.

Paul Root Wolpe: It’s time to question bio-engineering Great overview by bioethicist Paul Root Wolpe on recent bio-engineering experiments, from hybrid pets to mice that grow human ears in his TED talk. The living eel brain inside the robot-car was actually already done in 2001! edit wp | stream | video Sun, 03 Apr 2011 14:51:06
David Brooks: The social animal Great TED talk by New York Times columnist David Brooks titled The Social Animal. He talks about how our society is based on reason, while our emotions are mostly smarter than our reasoning. How you should have a couple of good night sleeps before making big decisions, to give our unconscious the opportunity to work away on the issue, before communicating back the results in form of intuition and emotion. edit wp | stream | video Wed, 23 Mar 2011 14:02:31
